MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana and Goal Telecommunications have qualified to proceed to the next stage of Ghana’s 5G spectrum licensing process, according to the National Communications Authority.
The regulator said on 9 September that it received four applications for licences in the 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz and 3 GHz bands by the 27 August deadline. Scancom Plc, which operates MTN Ghana, Ghana Telecommunications Company Limited, which operates Telecel Ghana, and Goal Telecommunications Ltd passed the eligibility and technical qualification stage. Infrava Ltd did not qualify.
The three successful applicants will now move to the stage where their Best Price Offers are opened and ranked. The NCA said it would notify them separately of the date, time and venue.
The licensing process now has a delivery benchmark beyond the award itself. In a separate 9 September statement, the NCA said the 5G licence conditions require 70% population coverage by March 2027.
The NCA said it intends to monitor compliance with coverage and service-quality obligations as 5G deployment proceeds.
No date has been published for opening the price offers.
