Public transport fares remain unchanged while the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council continue talks with the government over a proposed increase.
The two transport bodies said no new fares had been approved after formal consultations with the Transport Ministry began in Accra on 8 September. In a joint statement they told drivers, station masters and transport owners to keep using the existing approved fares until a new determination is announced.
The unions entered the talks with a proposal for an upward fare review. The Ministry briefed them on current economic conditions and the government’s GH¢2 per litre intervention on diesel. Both sides said the effect of that fuel measure on operating costs still needed to be assessed alongside the proposed increase.
A joint team of Ministry, GPRTU and GRTCC representatives is to review the cost inputs used in fare determination before an outcome is communicated.
The unions cautioned their members against making unilateral fare adjustments while the review continues.
